I’m not religious but I do answer to a higher authority to guide my thoughts, words and actions, because as much as I want to be a good person, I’m woefully inconsistent. One bad day and kindness can go out the window if I’m not beholden to the powers of good.
I see evidence of this power everywhere if I make an honest attempt to look for it and that power doesn’t suffer from the same human frailties that I possess.
I have no idea what God is but I’m not it! A lot of people have a visceral aversion to the “God” word and I sympathize with them. It’s just a word and there are many others that will suffice (Truth, Love, the Void, etc). The important thing isn’t the word but what it points to and how the idea of it informs my life.
The Book of Roman in a King James Bible would befit an answer to this post better than a John Adams quote, even though he was a highly intelligent and honorable man.
Great piece, David. Many facets of our lives are long time passing. Grown-ups, morals, the work ethic, education at all levels, patriotism, family, marriage, religion, energy independence, integrity, safety, and the big three that have generally been the hallmarks of long-running civilizations like ancient Egypt and China: Truth, Justice and Order. It's more than just valuing these characteristics.; they are foundational to everything, baked into everyone's psyche; axiomatic.
I am with you 100%. There has been a long, incrementally implemented, systematic dismantling of our cultural and moral beliefs in western civilizations. The subversion's subtlety has been its weapon, the slow advance - its success.
We must continue to fight the evil forces with everything we have.
Thanks (again) David for reminding us of those small course changes.
No problem.
Great essay.

Thank you for another great post!
We can at least fight them a little by making woke jokes. Make it uncool to be left or woke.
