Antonio Gramsci is credited with the idea of the Long March Through the Institutions, the thinking being that, since America was essentially immune to a Communist takeover due to our robust economy and civil liberties, we should try the approach of subverting the major institutions so as to brainwash, blackmail, propagandize and generally push people into the mindset of Communism. And now, here we are.
He was not alone in this idea, as seen in the wikipedia article.

Universities, the great bastions of thought where new ideas are explored and mankind is enlightened, have become intellectual straight jackets, though one wonders how many students pay much attention.
"Socialism is precisely the religion that must overwhelm Christianity. … In the new order, Socialism will triumph by first capturing the culture via infiltration of schools, universities, churches and the media by transforming the consciousness of society." ~ Antonio Gramsci
We see in the painting above the end state of this trajectory.
Many of us have noted and proclaimed in our various online endeavors that socialism and communism (but I repeat myself) are materialistic religions, and we are thereby derided as kooks for saying so, but above we have it from the lips of the man himself. No doubt the idea was that Marxism being a religion people would bring a religious like fervor to it’s cause.
We see around us the fruits of the pursuit of this idea, the news organs cannot help themselves from warping any straight news story into a bit of Marxist brain rinsing, if not outright washing, and many churches evince a Marxist tone. Even capitalist corporations are leaning that way, with things like DEI hires making aviation unsafe and beer companies becoming laughing stocks while losing market share.
The man himself, Antonio Gramsci
Is there anything we can do about it? Laughing in their faces is a good start, as is any general action of pouring water on the brush-fires of leftist thought that you find littering your daily landscape. Remember that Alinsky said that ridicule is our most powerful weapon, so woke jokes may be in order. (Don’t ridicule any particular person, but rather woke and Leftist thought.) You have people who have simply absorbed the thoughts, and you have the true believers. The former may just listen to the new thoughts you've provided, while the latter will explode in an entertaining way.
Leftists like to get on your local governing organizations like school boards, city councils, county commissions and library committees, so an influx of normal humans into these would help. If on a school board one might try to make some additions to the curriculum, as well as some deletions. (One wonders why it is that some school boards and teachers are not up on child porn charges.)
"The education of all children, from the moment that they can get along without a mother's care, shall be in state institutions." ~ Karl Marx
What might be added to public schools? We need to inoculate our children from the mind viruses prevalent in schools and society, so understanding some of the methods used by the powerful would help our future citizens understand the psychological war. Some things that could be taught about include methods of control used by the powerful; false flags, critical thinking, debate for everyone, criminal thinking, mass government and non-government killings through history, marksmanship, some basic outdoor and boy-scout type things, the emperor has no clothes phenomenon and how it's exploited, propaganda, with the five rules of propaganda posted on the walls, self defense as part of PE, warfare concepts, how to run a business, and basic engineering principles. Classroom exercises would be in order, such as thinking up methods of control, designing false flags, propaganda, or how they might use the emperor with no clothes phenomenon. The point is to give students the tools to see through big brother control mechanisms. And last but not least, the U.S. Constitution and it's importance in preserving individual liberty. Sounds like a lot, but with wokeness eliminated there would be more room. Oh, and starting the day with a non-sectarian prayer over the PA system and perhaps a bible verse wouldn't hurt. It might be claimed that that constitutes congress establishing a state religion, but that sounds fishy to me.

Remember that Gramsci said that Socialism is the religion that will overwhelm Christianity, so the decline of Christianity we're seeing may be at least partly the result of Socialism. In fact it's overwhelming all positive religions, while allowing negative ones to prosper. A belief in a higher power of goodness is not only a defense against Socialism in particular and totalitarianism, it's a defense against dark forces in general, both temporal and spiritual. It affects what people will or will not do, and gives them strength to resist the four manipulative forces of money, ideology, coercion and ego when it comes to resisting being drawn into acting on behalf of the dark side. (A hat tip to Michael Yon who describes that phenomenon under the acronym MICE.)
"My object in life is to dethrone God and destroy capitalism." ~ Karl Marx
But there are actually dark spiritual forces that seem to be increasing, which I fortunately don't have personal experience with. An interesting take on this was written by Naomi Wolf:
If you think evil thoughts you will become more evil. Someone starting down a path of criminal activity will move deeper into that realm. If someone begins contemplating murder he may think about it more and more, until the unthinkable becomes thinkable. Just thinking negatively will tilt your whole worldview into a negative space, so it's important to try to control your own thoughts. Think about what type of person you want to be and try to arrange your thinking accordingly. Though just a story the “dark side” of the Star Wars saga is reflective.
"We are opposed around the world by a monolithic and ruthless conspiracy that relies primarily on covert means for expanding its sphere of influence — on infiltration instead of invasion, on subversion instead of elections, on intimidation instead of free choice, on guerrillas by night instead of armies by day" ~ John F. Kennedy

Time will tell if this control of the major institutions by the Left will remain, but it seems to me that their grip is beginning to wane, probably helped by the information flow on the internet. Let's do what we can to let their grip slip away, remember that resistance is not futile.

I've been drifting away from the subject at hand of the long march, but I think that these thoughts are relevant. The institutional power is powerful only if people let it. And always remember:
Stay Brave, Stay Free
Mention the long march through the institutions to the average America and it's like showing a wristwatch to a hog.
Outstanding excellent post nevertheless.
Exceptional essay, David. I believe an introduction to Gramsci to those who do not yet know of him is long overdue. Marx and other notable radicals throughout history may have written their share of rules for destroying a free country and turning it into a communist, totalitarian one, but it is Gramsci's work that put them cohesively on a multi-generational path to (nearly) realizing it in a country as robustly free as America. Let's hope nearly is as close as it gets.
Oustanding work - thank you again for another thoughtful and interesting post!
