Thoughts on Propaganda
First things first. Read, familiarize yourself with and remember the five rules of propaganda:
The rule of simplification - reducing all data to a simple confrontation between 'Good and Bad', 'Friend and Foe'.
The rule of disfiguration - discrediting the opposition by crude smears and parodies.
The rule of transfusion - manipulating the consensus values of the target audience for one's own ends.
The rule of unanimity - presenting one's viewpoint as if it were unanimous opinion of all right-thinking people: draining the doubting individual into agreement by the appeal of star-performers, by social pressure , and by 'psychological contagion'.
The rule of orchestration - endlessly repeating the same messages in different variations and combinations.
These have been known and used for a long time, at least since the Middle Ages. They should remind you of what we see everyday with the woke media, politicians and plain people who have bought into the narrative. I encourage all and sundry to disseminate this list as widely as possible. That the general public is unaware of the list may be taken as evidence that it is being used, and it would be inconvenient for the powerful if it were widely known.
One may note that this list seems less like a description of propaganda than a list of the activities of the ruling elites and main stream media. When does one see them acting in any way but by one of these rules?
Most issues are quite complex, so rule 1 is to camouflage that fact. If a problem is very simple there is no need for discussion, and anyone opposing the narrative is either stupid or evil. Climate change is all our fault and we must enslave all mankind if we are to survive. Never mention that the sun's output sometimes changes, the ellipticity of the earth's orbit is oscillating, that the tilt of the Earth relative to the ecliptic plane is oscillating or that the precession of the equinoxes occurs. Never mention that for roughly the past 2 million years we have been oscillating between ice ages and warm periods and that we are in a warming period now that we are powerless to stop, but the ice will someday return. And a few other things. Keep it simple, the Earth is warming because we produce carbon dioxide and we must become totalitarian. This creates a false dilemma.
Rule 2 means those who disagree are bad. They don't care that the Earth is dying and they are greedy. Some are only simple minded bumpkins with knuckles dragging on the ground.
Rule 3 means actually change the culture. Starting in the schools convince children that homosexuality and perversion are healthy and normal. Portray the culture differently in entertainment than it is in actuality. In TV and films, never show people going to church, show happy, healthy homosexuals, never show a good civilian with a firearm being a hero. Over time, the other parts of the propaganda take hold more easily. The other rules are mostly techniques for suppressing other views, but number 3 encompasses many things. Attempts to make perversion and homosexuality considered healthy and normal, trying to make Scientism the religion of the country (and probably the world), eliminating the right of self defense by means of numbers 1, 2, 4 and 5, and on and on.
Number 4 means not showing opposing points of view. All experts show a nearly united front except a few dissenters who are portrayed as oddballs. Those holding opposing points of view must be made to seem old fashioned, out of step and not very bright. This helps to change the conventional wisdom and move the Overton Window, the range of acceptable ideas.
Number 5, keep up the pressure. The latest forest fire must be due to global warming, sports figures and entertainers must drop approved talking points periodically. The propaganda must not be allowed to slip out of peoples minds.
An odd thing about the current situation is the overuse of rules 4 and 5; their use is so pervasive that it's difficult not to notice, undermining their effectiveness. It would seem that to use them properly one would mix in a certain amount of counter propaganda to ones own propaganda, so that it would seem like a fair exchange of ideas, but with ones own in the majority. As I write this the left wing media are in propaganda mode concerning the recently released film Sound of Freedom. It's not clear why, but they seem to see it as right wing and are attacking. (Wanting to protect children from criminals is not a political position.) The vitriol is sufficient to send a message that they are propagandizing the film, but if they would dial it back a bit they would be more believable. The same thing happened with the attacks on Donald Trump. It was so over the top that a reasonable person could not take it seriously, so a little lighter touch might have been more effective. That it was as successful as it was seems like evidence of the old adage that Man is a rationalizing animal and not a rational one.
Slightly changing the meaning of words is frequently done, and probably falls under rule 3. The word “freedom” seems like the greatest victim, usually being applied to the latest Leftist thing. Freedom of speech is now the freedom of the executive branch to eliminate ideas and opinions they wish to suppress. Redistribution of wealth is freedom from fear and hunger, eliminating the right of self defense is freedom from fear or freedom to be safe. (I sometimes wonder why those who put “No Firearms” signs in their places of business don't put up “No Crime” signs instead. They would be even safer.) The civilian semi automatic versions of military rifles are called “Assault Rifles” with the clear intent of causing people to assume that the automatic version is legal. (I was once having a conversation with a relatively reasonable leftist, explaining the difference. When I parenthetically mentioned that years ago I had had to qualify with a real one once a year I got a peculiar look.)
Distorting historical facts as well as facts in general. The Ku Klux Klan was a Democrat organization, but how many people know that? The Democrats were the party of slavery before the civil war, but we are told that the Republicans want to put Blacks back into slavery.
Consider the case of Kyle Rittenhouse. (On the ground in the picture.)
Rule 1: He crossed state lines and went to a rally for minority rights and shot three people, killing two. It was left for the casual listener to assume that he shot three innocent black protesters rather than three white criminals. Little if any mention of the attempts on his life, or that Kenosha was being burned and looted.
Rule 2: He was white and carrying a rifle so must have been a racist. Even the president of the U.S. Called him a white supremacist with no evidence.
Rule 3: There has been a cultural attack on the right of self defense in general since the Clinton administration, if not before. The culture as a whole is constantly called racist and fascist.
Rule 4: He received no fair consideration from the main stream media or the prominent. A situation was created such that all were expected take the side against him so as not to be considered a fascist. His legal team was even barred from using GoFundMe, and people lost their jobs for sending money to his defense fund.
Rule 5: The negative message was all one would here. Jokes were made at his expense.
There is an admonition in the Bible; woe to those who call good evil and evil good. Those who practice the five rules of propaganda should be wary of oncoming woe.
Stay brave, stay free
"The vitriol is sufficient to send a message that they are propagandizing the film, but if they would dial it back a bit they would be more believable."
Are they very worried about believability? I think they are so confident in their control of the mainstream media (and most other institutions) that they no longer need to bother with the lie that they are "unbiased" or are reporting the truth. They are just announcing the new lie. And, obeying Rule 4, they all support it in lockstep.
I always find this guy interesting
